Oakwood Mobile HomesFrustrated Face

My husband and I bought our first home 2 years ago at the age of 25. We were excited and happy, we were young and naive also. We bought a mobile home from Oakwood Mobile homes, a 3 bedroom and 2 bath 16x80. Upon the first day of living there, the maintenance man had to come out and rewire our furnace. That should have been a warning sign right there, especially when the nest day, they had to come and rewire it all over again as it still did not work properly. Finally, we got the furnace fixed and had to deal with all of the other little annoying things that started going wrong. The formica on our countertops started bubbling up after only 2 months and we called to have it replaced. It took Oakwood 3 months to do anything about it. In the next 6 months, we dealt with the things that broke on our own, as we did not feel like waiting around for Oakwood to show up to do the work and then have to redo it anyway because they didn't fix it right. Then in November of 1996, after just 9 months in the home our water pipes froze and burst. These pipes were the pipes that were supposedly covered by 10 inches of insulation. When we called Oakwood it took them 1-2 weeks to fix the pipes. All winter long we dealt with frozen pipes almost all the time. After the frozen pipes fiasco, we decided not to call Oakwood anymore and just do all repairs on our own, even though we still had 3 months remaining on our warranty. When the financial company called for a survey, my husband did not give Oakwood a good grade, and our saleslady called him at work and yelled at him about it! She harrassed him over not getting a good reference!!

We did pretty good keeping up on the repairs and general maintenance on our own, and then the first day of June, 1997, our year and a half old mobile home was knocked off it's blocks by a 15 year old drunk driver!! Of course this was not Oakwoods fault, but when our contractor ordered parts he had to order through Oakwood. They told him it would be 60-90 days before the parts would be in. After 60 days he started calling them and found they had never ordered parts. After I called them up and chewed them out good, they called back and told us that the parts had been ordered in August and were in, but they just didn't know where they were at the time we called, but knew where they were now, and we could come pick them up at any time. When my contractor finally went to pick up the parts (3 weeks later) He discovered that Oakwood had torn used parts off of another trailer and tried to sell them to us as new parts. Oakwood finally ordered the parts after all that and got them in within 2 weeks, and my contractor slowly started working on my home. In the meantime, ever since the accident, we were unable to live in the home, we had to pay rent to live in an apartment, the house payment and the lot rent all at the same time. Our homeowners insurance reimbursed us a little, but we did get behind on the house payments. We called Oakwood several times to get a payment defferred to help out, our account representative said all she needed was a little information nd it would be done, this was the first of October. At the end of October, I got a call from Oakwood Acceptance Corp. telling me that my payment was way behind. I explained to her what happened and that I had talked to my account representative (who was no longer my account rep.) who had told me the payment was defferred. Turned out, I was supposed to pay $55.00 and fill out some paperwork for the defferrment. I did as asked, signed a faxed paper and moneygrammed the payment of $55.00 to them, and was under the assumption that the payment was defferred.I never heard another thing from Oakwood and things were starting to go pretty well for us, and the day after Christmas, Oakwood called and said I was behind on my payments. Turns out I was supposed to have signed and mailed an original form from Oakwood, which I had never received. My new account representative refused to send another form, and told me there was an eviction notice in the mail. My husband and I consulted with a lawyerat our first opportunity, and discovered our options were limited. On the First day of the year 1998, my husband and I decided to declare bankrupty. It is our only option to get out of the mobile home which is not even worth the $9000.00 we have plugged into it just in payments!!! Right now, we are in the process of picking up the peices and getting on with our lives. Maybe in 10 years we will try bto buy another home, but it sure won't be an OAKWOOD!!!!
